Inspired by a shoe from the 1980s, Adidas’ ZX 8000 brings modern tech with a touch of nostalgia

A few weeks after releasing the popular Superstar sneaker as a golf shoe, Adidas has announced another iconic street shoe to be available for golf. The ZX 8000 Golf Shoe is the first ever golf version of the popular Adidas ZX shoe that gave runners a new look for training when it was released in the 1980s.

The ZX shoe series dates back to 1984 when Adidas saw a need for a more versatile shoe to support both road and all-terrain runners. Shoes in the early 1980s were neither comfortable nor durable, leading to a short-lived and blister-filled wear. The ZX aimed to provide a cushioned shoe that wouldn’t fall apart after a few uses. Looking to honor the original mission of the shoe, the Adidas Golf team made sure to keep the patented Torsion System that creates a stable wear and BOOST midsole that adds responsive comfort in the new ZX 8000 Golf Shoe.

For a more golf-specific use, the golf team used water-resistant materials on the upper and added a ton of grip to the spikeless outsole. Designers were able to make the outsole almost an exact replica of the original ZX’s grip pattern by adding longer secondary lugs and a tread optimized for golf.

The bright turquoise and yellow colorway was inspired by the 1989 version of the ZX shoe that topped fashion charts in the neon-laden 1980s. Similar to the original, a neon lace jewel adorns the bottom of the eyestay with the words “ZX Golf.” For an extra golf-y touch, a fun Adidas Golf logo was added to the heel and sockliner of the shoe.

The ZX 8000 Golf Shoe will retail at $130 and will be available in limited quantities on September 4 at addias.com
