Well … we’ve made it. After 10 weeks since the PGA Tour’s return post-COVID-19, the FedEx Cup Playoffs begin this week at TPC Boston with The Northern Trust, the first of three events culminating with the top 30 players making it to the Tour Championship at East Lake. The 125-man field will be cut down to 70 for the BMW Championship by the end of this tournament. This is also the only event of the FedEx Cup that features a 36-hole cut.
Current points leader Justin Thomas will be looking to win his second FedEx Cup. Only two other golfers—Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy—have won multiple cups since its inception in 2007.
Woods, currently at No. 49 in the standings, will be playing his third week since golf’s return from hiatus. This is just his sixth start of the season, with his most recent being a T-37 at the PGA Championship.
All 125 golfers eligible to play in The Northern Trust are committed, including PGA Championship winner Collin Morikawa. This will be his first event since the major victory. There will also be eight previous TPC Boston winners teeing off this week, including Woods, McIlroy, Webb Simpson, Bryson DeChambeau, Adam Scott, Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler and Charley Hoffman.
The Northern Trust will alternate every year between Liberty National and TPC Boston, so last year’s winner, Patrick Reed, will be defending his title at a different course. Reed does own decent course history at TPC Boston, having finished in the top six in three of the last four events at TPC Boston (when it was the old Dell Technologies Championship, previously the second out of four events before the FedEx Cup was reduced to three events).
