Marina Alex tests positive for COVID-19 in pre-travel screening ahead of LPGA’s return to golf

News

The LPGA reported that a second player has tested positive for COVID-19 as the tour gets set to resume its 2020 season on Friday at the LPGA Drive On Championship. Marina Alex had been scheduled to compete at Inverness Club in Ohio but remained home after getting word that her pre-travel test showed she had the illness.

Alex, 29, took to social media to confirm the news and let everyone know she was feeling OK. “I am very fortunate that I have not experienced any symptoms of COVID over the last nine days,” said Alex, who added that three subsequent follow-up tests in the last seven days have come up negative.

In a LPGA release, tour officials say that Alex hopes to be able to play in next week’s Marathon Classic.

On Thursday, the LPGA also released numbers from the first phase of its COVID-19 testing process that has spanned the past three weeks. The tour implemented 205 player and caddie tests ahead of the Symetra Tour’s FireKeepers Casino Hotel Championship, with one member testing positive: Fatima Fernandez Cano. Among 233 pre-travel tests for players and caddies ahead of the Drive On event, Alex was the only player to test positive as had one unnamed caddie.
